Last Saturday, while the chili cook-off buzzed with activity at Jackson Field, I found myself craving something different. So, I headed over to the Fifth String Food Truck parked outside American Fifth Spirits. I’d been hearing great things about it for a year, and I was excited to finally give it a try.
Even though the menu featured just four options, each one looked tempting. My dining companion and I decided to order one of everything to share. The jalapeño popper poutine caught my eye immediately. It wasn’t just pretty; it was delicious. This dish featured golden hand-cut fries smothered in a peppery cheese sauce, creamy ranch, cheese curds, crispy pork belly, jalapeños, and red onions. It took the classic bar snack to a whole new level.
If you’re vegetarian, there’s a mushroom poutine too. It comes with mushroom-miso gravy, a fried egg, and those irresistible cheese curds. Both dishes showcase fresh ingredients and bold flavors.
The standout for me was the braised beef sandwich. It came loaded with horseradish sauce, sauerkraut, sour apple, roasted red onions, arugula, and white cheddar, all nestled in a ciabatta roll. The beef was wonderfully tender and juicy, perfectly complemented by the apple and sauerkraut’s zing. The pork sandwich was tasty as well, topped with a squash-apple chutney, but the beef sandwich was truly unforgettable.
