Explore the Great Outdoors: Register Now for Wilderness Medical Courses at Western New Mexico University!

WNMU Outdoor Programs is gearing up for Spring 2026 by opening registration for its Wilderness Medicine Courses. These hands-on classes are perfect for anyone who loves the outdoors, from casual adventurers to dedicated professionals.

Three courses are available, each designed for different experience levels:

  • Wilderness First Aid (WFA): Great for folks heading out on short trips with access to help nearby. It covers essential skills like basic anatomy and first aid techniques.
  • Wilderness First Responder (WFR): Aimed at outdoor professionals and those in remote areas, this intensive course includes CPR training and emergency response skills.
  • WFR/WEMT Re-certification: For current WFR and WEMT certified individuals to refresh their skills and stay updated on best practices.

The WFA course runs from February 27 to March 1, 2026, with a cost of $350. Discounts are available for students, WNMU staff, and public service workers.

The WFR course spans two weekends, with sessions on February 13-15 and February 21-22. This course costs $850, but again, there are discounts for eligible groups.

The re-certification course takes place on February 7 and 8, 2026, costing $300 for most participants and $200 for students.

These courses not only prepare you for emergencies but also build confidence in wilderness settings. According to recent studies from the Wilderness Medical Society, skills learned in these courses can significantly increase the chances of a positive outcome during outdoor rescues.

With the rise in outdoor activities, having proper training is crucial. Many social media trends highlight a growing concern for safety, showing how this training meets a real need in today’s adventurous society.
