Yavapai College is stepping up to support its community with another drive-through food distribution. Partnering with St. Mary’s Food Bank, this event aims to help students and local residents in need.
“The goal is simple: If you need food, come and get food,” says Deborah Chambers, Student Affairs Coordinator. Volunteers will load up cars with nutritious items, ensuring families don’t have to go hungry.
Since launching in fall 2024, these distributions have already assisted over 600 households in the area. Chambers emphasizes the college’s commitment to helping everyone, saying, “We’re here to lift people up.”
The next event will take place on Friday, October 17, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. It will be a drive-through operation, beginning on North Washington Street and ending at the main parking lot. Food will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis until supplies run out. While the exact offerings won’t be known until the day before, participants can expect a nice mix of fresh fruits and vegetables, bread, dairy, and meat.
Yavapai College established its food pantry in 2017 to ensure that students and their families have access to basic needs. This pantry serves hundreds every year, supported by community donations, local churches, and organizations.
For those who can’t attend the distribution, it’s allowed to send a friend or family member to pick up food. More local food resources can be found at mohelp.org.
In recent trends, food insecurity has been on the rise in many communities, highlighting the importance and impact of such initiatives. According to a study by Feeding America, food insecurity affects 1 in 8 individuals in the U.S., showing a pressing need for services like the one offered by Yavapai College.
