Priyambada Jayakumar, author of a new book on Dr. M.S. Swaminathan, refutes claims that the Green Revolution is to blame for Punjab’s groundwater issues. In her interview with The Indian Express, she pointed the finger at political decisions and subsidies instead.
Dr. Swaminathan, often called the father of the Green Revolution in India, is recognized globally for his contributions to food security. Jayakumar emphasized that Punjab’s water challenges stem from poor political choices rather than agricultural methods. “The Green Revolution itself was essential at the time,” she said. She explained that every government has promised free electricity for farmers, which greatly impacts water use.
Interestingly, Dr. Swaminathan was awarded the Bharat Ratna posthumously before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Jayakumar noted that many wonder why such an honor wasn’t given while he was alive. Farmers even keep his photo alongside images of deities, reflecting his significant impact on their lives.
Journalist Prem Shankar Jha highlighted Dr. Swaminathan’s innovative approach, not just focusing on food crops but also on utilizing crop residues for biomass. This comprehensive view set him apart in agricultural science.
Jayakumar also described Dr. Swaminathan’s efforts in countries facing famine, such as Vietnam, Cambodia, and even North Korea. His influence extended beyond India, emphasizing global hunger solutions.
Although Dr. Swaminathan worked with every Prime Minister from Nehru to Modi, he maintained equal respect for all. Yet, Jayakumar humorously recalled that he admitted Indira Gandhi was his favorite.
Notably, there is no Nobel Prize for agriculture, a fact that many agree is a significant oversight. Norman Borlaug, another agriculture giant, acknowledged that without Dr. Swaminathan, the Green Revolution would not have occurred globally.
As we consider the agricultural landscape today, it’s worth reflecting on how past decisions shape our future. While the Green Revolution was a turning point, ongoing conversations about water and farming practices are vital as we seek sustainable solutions for generations to come.
