County Councillors Rally to Revoke Climate Change Emergency Declaration - What It Means for Our Future

A recent decision by Reform UK has overturned a climate emergency declaration made by Staffordshire County Council six years ago. This declaration was put in place by a Conservative-led council in 2019.

Since then, progress has been made. The county council managed to cut its carbon emissions by over 50% in its push towards net zero. However, after Reform UK won the elections in May, Cllr Andrew Mynors proposed to rescind the declaration.

Cllr Mynors, who oversees connectivity in the council, stated that the focus should shift to immediate environmental actions rather than long-term targets. He emphasized the need for a new Environmental Strategy to better serve the community and ensure value for money.

Despite these claims, Cllr Jack Rose, the council’s only Green Party member, raised concerns about a potential conflict of interest. He pointed out Cllr Mynors’ ties to BDM Geolog UK Ltd, a company involved in oil and gas operations. Cllr Rose argued that this connection undermines the decision to retract the climate emergency.

The council reviewed these concerns and determined that Cllr Mynors had appropriately disclosed his employment and interests. An amendment to maintain the climate emergency, proposed by former cabinet member Cllr Simon Tagg, did not receive enough support. He cautioned that rescinding the declaration could send negative signals to residents and partners.

This debate reflects a growing divergence in how local governments approach climate action. As of 2023, a survey from the Carbon Trust indicated that 7 in 10 residents believe local councils should prioritize climate initiatives. This situation underscores the complex balance councils must navigate between immediate community needs and long-term environmental goals.
