Forget Ellen DeGeneres’ iconic Oscars selfie from 2014; there’s a new contender for the spotlight. China’s Tianwen-2 space probe has taken a breathtaking selfie with Earth, which looks like a tiny dot in the background.

This probe is on a mission to reach the asteroid Kamoʻoalewa, yet it paused for a moment to show off its stunning view. Captured by the camera on its robotic arm, the picture features its gleaming return capsule and the Chinese flag, with our home planet shining far away.

At that moment, Tianwen-2 was about 43 million kilometers from Earth, the same distance it is from its asteroid target. Talk about a perfect alignment!

It’s a lighthearted nod to our age where sharing moments online feels essential, even in the vastness of space. Just like celebrities, this space probe scored a social media moment that went viral.

Launched just last May, Tianwen-2 is making impressive strides toward Kamoʻoalewa, often called a “mini-moon” because of its orbit near Earth. The probe is expected to reach its destination by July 2026 and will collect samples to return to Earth in 2027. After that, it plans to explore a comet named 311P/PANSTARRS, arriving there around 2035.
