Kano Soars from 35th to 4th Place in Nigeria’s Climate Governance Ranking: A Game-Changer for Sustainability!

Kano State has made impressive strides in climate governance, climbing from 35th to 4th place in Nigeria’s 2025 Subnational Climate Governance Performance Ranking. This shift reflects the state’s strong commitment to addressing climate issues while considering local needs.

Dahir Hashim, the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, attributes this success to focused reforms, better institutions, and community involvement. Over the last year, Kano has made significant improvements, including enhancing climate-smart infrastructure and adopting the Kano State Climate Change Policy.

Key projects have played a role in this transformation. Initiatives like deploying renewable energy in public institutions, urban greening efforts, and extensive afforestation and erosion control programs are helping the state adapt to climate change. These steps not only promote cleaner energy but also foster inclusive growth.

Hashim emphasized that this achievement is a result of teamwork. Local leaders, civil society groups, and development partners have all contributed to advancing climate action in Kano. The recognition is seen as a boost for collaboration and accountability among states, thanks in part to the ranking initiative led by the Society for Planet and Prosperity and the University of Bristol.

For instance, a recent study by the World Resources Institute highlights that local governments can significantly influence environmental outcomes by implementing effective policies.
