Google’s latest foldable phone, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, has made headlines for all the wrong reasons. In a recent durability test by tech YouTuber JerryRigEverything, the device didn’t just fail; it exploded.
During his October 14 video, JerryRigEverything put the phone through rigorous tests, checking for scratch, dust, and bend resistance. Unfortunately, this foldable phone snapped at a weak point near the hinge, similar to issues seen in earlier Pixel Fold models.
Despite claiming an IP68 dust resistance rating, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold couldn’t handle dust exposure. The hinge became filled with debris, making strange noises that hinted it wasn’t properly sealed.
Things took a serious turn when the internal battery short-circuited after the device broke. JerryRigEverything noted that it ignited and produced smoke during the test. This incident marks a first for him; in over a decade of testing smartphones, he had never witnessed one explode.
He criticized Google for repeating the same design flaw, placing the antenna lines in a location that makes them vulnerable for three generations in a row. “This is by far the weakest folding smartphone I’ve ever tested,” he remarked.
The issue of durability in foldable phones isn’t new. A report from Consumer Technology Association showed that consumer interest in foldable devices is growing, yet many remain wary due to past failures. In July, a survey found that 65% of users are hesitant about buying foldable phones due to concerns about durability and performance.
For comparison, JerryRigEverything tested the iPhone Air just last month. Many experts expected it to bend easily, yet it only flexed under extreme pressure, showcasing effective design and engineering.
The feedback from social media has also been critical. Many users expressed their disappointment over Google’s latest product, emphasizing that innovation shouldn’t come at the cost of basic functionality and safety.
As the tech world watches, it remains to be seen how Google will respond to these concerns. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold’s failure highlights the ongoing challenges in the evolving market of foldable smartphones.
