Dr. Lauren Geaney, a foot and ankle surgeon at UConn Health, has joined the leadership team of the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS). She graduated from UConn in 2008 and has been with UConn Health since 2013. Currently, she serves as an associate professor of orthopedic surgery and is also the associate director of the UConn Orthopaedic Residency Program.
Her journey with AOFAS began in 2010 when she was a resident. Since then, she has held multiple roles within the organization. “Joining the Resident Scholars program opened my eyes to my passion for this specialty,” Geaney recalls. “Being selected for the board is a full-circle moment for me.”
Geaney was recognized with the AOFAS Women’s Leadership Career Development Award three years ago for her efforts in promoting gender diversity in orthopedic surgery, a field that has traditionally seen a male majority.
“The Society has been vital to my growth as a surgeon,” she says, feeling honored to give back in her new role. Geaney joined the AOFAS Board of Directors in September 2023, where she will serve until 2027. This board includes key positions like the president and treasurer, allowing her to influence positive changes for both the organization and patients.
This recent appointment comes at a time when the landscape for women in surgery is shifting. According to a 2021 study from the American College of Surgeons, the percentage of women in surgical specialties increased from 15% in 2000 to 22% in 2020. Having leaders like Geaney can inspire more women to enter and thrive in such fields.
As social media continues to highlight diversity in medicine, Geaney’s story resonates with many. The hashtag #WomenInSurgery has gained traction on platforms like Twitter and Instagram, showcasing female surgeons who are breaking barriers and making a difference.
With her commitment to education and advocacy, Geaney’s leadership is sure to impact not just her community but also the future of orthopedic surgery.
