Michael J. Fox has shared something deeply personal in his new memoir, “Future Boy.” After 40 years, he reached out to Eric Stoltz, the actor he replaced as Marty McFly in “Back to the Future.”
Stoltz had already been filming for six weeks when the decision was made to replace him. Fox was initially unavailable due to his role in “Family Ties,” but the director, Robert Zemeckis, thought he was the better fit. This casting change proved pivotal for both actors.
In the memoir, Fox reveals that he understood Stoltz’s silence over the decades. He wrote him a letter, humorously saying, “If your answer is ‘piss off and leave me alone’… That works, too.” Stoltz replied with a playful message that started with the same phrase but quickly turned friendly. Although he declined to contribute to the book, he seemed open to meeting.
When they finally met, the two actors quickly discovered they had much in common. Their conversation flowed easily as they discussed their careers and families. “What transpired on ‘Back to the Future’ had not made us enemies,” Fox wrote. Instead, they bonded over their shared experiences.
