Speakeasies have always intrigued Americans, even a century after Prohibition ended. Among the modern takes on this concept, A Light in the Attic stands out. With its hidden entrance behind a bookcase, it’s more about the theme than genuine secrecy.
But the Black Sheep Tavern offers something authentic. Located on Fritztown Road, this bar and restaurant opened in 2025, occupying the former Camelot Inn. The Rifferts ran a real speakeasy here during the 1920s, selling alcohol despite fines—a truly rebellious spirit.
Today, the tavern embraces that history. Guests can enjoy drinks and also try their luck at skill machines, a nod to its past. The dining area is comfortable, featuring a mix of tables and a U-shaped bar that invites a relaxed atmosphere.
When we visited for lunch, the space was peaceful, with only a few tables occupied. Our server was attentive, making the experience even better. She quickly took our drink orders and patiently answered questions about the menu, which featured sauces inspired by the restaurant’s history, like sheep sauce and rumrunner sauce.
I ordered a burger with the homemade rumrunner sauce, topped with creamy Cooper Sharp cheese. The burger was thick and satisfying, paired perfectly with well-seasoned fries. Julie chose the Bulger burger, topped with sheep sauce, and she enjoyed it just as much.
Interestingly, feedback on social media has highlighted the sweet potato fries as a must-have. Julie even returned a few days later for them, emphasizing how tasty they were with the dipping sauce. This insight is a great example of how user recommendations can elevate dining experiences.
Our visit was quick, with food arriving in no time, allowing us to sneak back to work without anyone noticing. At around $40 for two burgers, fries, and drinks, it felt affordable. However, on busier days, parking can be a challenge, which we noticed during a Sunday drive when the lot was full.
The history of the Black Sheep Tavern gives it a unique charm. We may no longer live under Prohibition, but we can appreciate the legacy behind this establishment. Dining here feels like enjoying a slice of history right at the table.
