The state has experienced extreme heat and unpredictable rainfall, with temperatures reaching a staggering 43°C in Jiribam in 2024.
Governor Balla announced the release of the updated State Action Plan on Climate Change. He stressed that this plan should not just remain a document but must result in tangible actions. Key initiatives include the Model Carbon-Positive Eco-Village at Phayeng and conservation projects at Loktak Lake. These efforts aim to address local vulnerabilities and enhance water security in the region.
Policies like these illustrate how collaboration between the government, scientists, and local communities can strengthen resilience to climate impacts. The Governor also praised various exhibitions that showcased community-led climate initiatives and released several important publications related to climate action in Manipur.
Recent statistics show that many regions similar to Manipur are experiencing the effects of climate change, with over 70% of farmers in India reporting shifts in rainfall patterns, according to a survey by the Indian Meteorological Department. Addressing these issues is critical not only for local communities but for the broader region as well. Building a sustainable future requires urgent collective action and commitment from everyone involved.
