A Stellar Showdown: Huskies Triumph Over Nittany Lions
After a remarkable championship run with the Nittany Lions, Alexa Markley made a big splash with the Huskies this season. In a thrilling match against her former team, Markley led Washington to a 3-2 victory over 17th-ranked Penn State. She delivered an impressive performance with 16 kills, including the final three points that secured the win.
This matchup marked a significant milestone for the Huskies. It was their first victory over Penn State since joining the Big Ten and their first win against the Nittany Lions since 2006. Back then, Penn State dominated college volleyball, winning four consecutive titles from 2007 to 2010.
Head Coach Leslie Gabriel praised her team, emphasizing their preparation and ability to withstand the pressure. “They’re a great team, and they won’t back down easily,” Gabriel said. The Huskies managed to maintain composure, especially after Penn State fought back to tie the match.
The game saw a lively crowd of 4,431 fans supporting the Huskies at Alaska Airlines Arena. Washington stormed through the first two sets, winning them convincingly. However, Penn State rallied, claiming the next two sets and setting up a nerve-wracking final set.
Markley stepped up when it mattered most. With the scoreboard at 12-11 in the fifth set, she scored two quick points, bringing the Huskies to match point. After a brief timeout, she sealed the victory with another well-placed kill.
Markley’s performance was noteworthy not just for her kills—she also contributed 13 digs, achieving her second career double-double. Teammates Kierstyn Barton and Simona Mateska also had stellar outings, with Barton adding 14 kills and Mateska hitting an impressive .393.
Defensively, senior libero Zoria Heard shone, racking up 27 digs—far surpassing her previous season high and leading the team to out-dig Penn State, 74 to 67. “Zoria is crucial for us,” Gabriel noted. “She keeps the ball in play and extends rallies.”
Statistically, Washington’s strong start was evident. In the first two sets, they hit .345 and .391, while Penn State struggled with a negative hitting percentage in the opening set. This early onslaught gave the Huskies a solid foundation, even as the match grew more competitive.
Looking ahead, the Huskies face another challenge as they prepare to take on 18th-ranked Minnesota. The upcoming game will not only be a test of skill but also a celebration of the 2005 NCAA Championship team, as the Huskies don vintage uniforms for the occasion.
In a sport that thrives on pressure and competition, Washington’s recent win against a powerhouse like Penn State is more than just a game—it’s a statement of their growing strength in the Big Ten. With rising talent like Markley and a resilient team spirit, the Huskies are ready to take on whatever challenges come next.
