The Hua Momona Foundation (HMF) is taking its annual Maui Music and Food Experience event to Chicago on November 7. This promises to be a fantastic night at the Copernicus Center’s Gateway Theater.
Some incredible artists will perform, including Grammy-winning Hawaii musician John Cruz, soul singing legend Bettye LaVette, and Lisa Fischer, known for her work with the Rolling Stones. Chicago’s own Nicholas Tremulis and renowned DJ Lady D will also join the lineup.
Culinary enthusiasts can look forward to dishes by Lahaina-born chef Nate Domingo from Chicago’s popular Hawaiian restaurant, Da Local Boy, and Maui-based chef Zach Laidlaw, who has impressed audiences on shows like Next Level Chef and Chopped.
On the following day, November 8, HMF will host a gala fundraiser at the Sanfilippo Estate in Barrington, Illinois. This elegant evening will highlight a four-course dinner by Chef Laidlaw, with wine pairings curated by sommelier Richard Olson, and live music from John Cruz and rising star Naiwi Teruya.
HMF has been active in aiding recovery from the tragic Lahaina fires of 2023, which were the deadliest in U.S. history. The foundation has provided over 80,000 meals and raised around $450,000 for food distribution, housing aid, and mental health programs.
These events are crucial for supporting the ongoing relief efforts.
The recent 2nd annual Maui Music and Food Experience saw over 1,000 guests at the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort, raising $200,000. It featured Hawaiian talents like Paula Fuga and amazing tributes to Jimi Hendrix by Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk, with guests including Mick Fleetwood and Ernie Isley.
The inaugural MMFE in 2024 garnered $250,000 for fire survivors and highlighted the vibrant music scene while boosting the local economy.
Concerts and fundraisers like these are not just about music and food; they foster community ties and bring awareness to ongoing challenges. HMF stands as a beacon of hope and support, reminding us all of the resilience of the human spirit.
