Limp Bizkit wrote, “Today we lost our brother. Our bandmate. Our heartbeat,” along with a photo of Rivers. They reflected on his impact, saying, “Sam wasn’t just our bass player—he was pure magic.”
Rivers met Fred Durst in Jacksonville, Florida. They initially played in a short-lived band called Malachi Sage. In 1994, after that project faded, they teamed up with Rivers’ cousin, drummer John Otto, to form Limp Bizkit. Guitarist Wes Borland joined soon after, completing the lineup.
“From the first note we played together, Sam brought a light and a rhythm that could never be replaced,” the band added. “His talent was effortless, and his heart enormous.”
Limp Bizkit’s first album, Three Dollar Bill Y’all, came out in 1997. But it was their second album, Significant Other, released in 1999, that truly launched them into stardom.
