Lynchburg Women’s Soccer Faces Tough Challenge Against No. 9 Washington & Lee

Lynchburg, Va. – The University of Lynchburg women’s soccer team faced off against No. 9 Washington & Lee on Homecoming Saturday, ultimately losing 1-0. The only goal came in the 26th minute, courtesy of Elizabeth Zimmerman from W&L.

Washington & Lee dominated with 15 shots compared to Lynchburg’s 7, yet both teams had 6 shots on target. The Hornets held a slight edge in possession at 52%, and they recorded more corner kicks (7 to 5).

The Generals began aggressively, taking the first eight shots of the match. Zimmerman’s goal came from just outside the 18-yard box, as she skillfully maneuvered past Lynchburg’s Lune DenHartog before launching a shot that beat goalkeeper Kate Shepherd.

Though both teams had opportunities throughout the first half, neither could find the back of the net. The Hornets earned several corner kicks but struggled to convert those chances into goals.

In the second half, Lynchburg picked up the pace. Rylee Wampler forced a fantastic save from W&L’s Kate McEnroe in the 57th minute. The Hornets had a promising two-on-one breakaway later in the half, but a misdirected pass denied them a chance to equalize.

Despite three shots in the second half, the Hornets couldn’t score, marking their third straight defeat, each by a single goal. This loss leaves Lynchburg in seventh place in the ODAC standings with 10 points.

Interestingly, Washington & Lee’s defense managed its 10th clean sheet and sixth consecutive shutout in ODAC play—a testament to their strong defensive strategies. Analyzing these statistics, it’s clear that while Lynchburg has talent, consistency in finishing is key to turning close losses into wins. According to recent statistics from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, teams that maintain high possession rates, like Lynchburg, often perform better over time, provided they can capitalize on their scoring chances.

Next up, Lynchburg will travel to Guilford on Wednesday, Oct. 22, for a 7:00 p.m. match at Appenzeller Field.
