EUGENE, Ore. — The Oregon volleyball team faced off against No. 17 Penn State on Saturday night, and despite a valiant effort, they lost in four sets. The match was held at Matthew Knight Arena, where 3,235 fans cheered on the Ducks.
Alanah Clemente stood out once again, scoring 23 kills. This was her second consecutive game with that many kills, and she maintained an impressive hitting percentage of .308. Oregon had nine aces, showing their offensive strength even in defeat.
The match ended with Penn State claiming victory with scores of 25-22, 23-25, 25-23, and 27-25. This marked the ninth meeting between these two teams, with just two games held in Eugene.
Head coach Trent Kersten didn’t shy away from the disappointment but emphasized that the team is moving in the right direction. “We’re a couple points away,” he said. “We want to win, and we believe we can improve.” His optimism is backed by the team’s competitive spirit and determination to perform better in upcoming matches.
In the defeat, Valentina Vaulet contributed 10 kills, while Sophia Meyers had nine kills and a team-high 15 digs. Iva Sucurovic also played well, adding six kills along with four blocks and three aces.
Defensively, freshman libero Reese Sheppard made her presence felt with 12 digs, six assists, and three aces. Natalie Fukumoto, another freshman, played a vital role, assisting five times in tough situations.
The fourth set was particularly dramatic, featuring 10 ties and six lead changes. Oregon rallied from a two-point deficit, with kills from Meyers and Sucurovic that tied the set. However, Penn State clinched the match with three straight points, ending with an ace that barely cleared the net.
Both teams started strong, with Penn State hitting over .300 in the first set. Martin led for Penn State with 10 kills, while Clemente kept pace for Oregon with eight.
Oregon took a solid lead in the second set, initially moving ahead 2-0. They reached a comfortable 22-16 lead, but the defending national champions fought back, narrowing the gap. Ultimately, Vaulet secured the set for Oregon, equalizing the match.
In the third set, Sheppard set the tone early with aces, but Penn State rallied to take a lead. With both teams trading points, it was a nail-biter, but the Nittany Lions edged ahead to win the set.
This match was Oregon’s ninth this season with eight or more aces, reinforcing their status as a strong offensive team. They rank third in the Big Ten with a total of 120 aces this season.
Looking ahead, the Ducks will travel to No. 23 UCLA for an important match. They return home soon to take on ninth-ranked Wisconsin. The support from fans remains crucial as the team strives for improvement and success.
