SAN MARCOS, Texas – Senior golfer Malisone Chanthapanya led the UNT Mean Green on Sunday during the first two rounds of the Jim West Challenge. She shot a solid 143, placing her in a tie for 10th on the leaderboard as the team prepares for the final round on Monday.
In the second round at Kissing Tree Golf Course, Chanthapanya posted a score of 71, just two strokes shy of her personal best. The Fort Worth native has achieved one top-10 finish in her college career so far.
Her performance sparked a shift for North Texas, which saw an 11-stroke improvement from the first to the second round. The team finished round two with a score of 289, putting them in eighth place overall among 14 teams. Notably, they outperformed higher-ranked teams like No. 38 Ohio State and No. 72 Notre Dame.
Juniors Bouquet Subsomboon and Katharina Anglett also contributed strong rounds, both shooting a 72. Subsomboon bettered her score by one stroke compared to the first round, while Anglett made an impressive nine-stroke improvement. Subsomboon also recorded her third career eagle on the fifth hole, marking a significant milestone early in the season.
As the competition heads into the final round on Monday, UNT’s total score stands at 589, keeping them competitive against strong teams, including two ranked in the top 25.
