The Oklahoma women’s tennis team showcased strong performances at the ITA Central Regional Championship held at the Headington Family Tennis Center. Senior Julia Garcia Ruiz was a standout, clinching regional singles co-champion. The pair of junior Chloé Nöel and sophomore Gloriana Nahum also excelled, finishing as doubles runners-up.
In the opening round, the Sooners had a remarkable showing: seven out of eight players won their singles matches, while three of four doubles teams advanced to the round of 32. The only hiccup came from sophomore Mia Buchnik, who lost a close match against Sofiia Mykhailets from Memphis.
As the tournament progressed, things heated up. Garcia Ruiz, Nöel, and Quadre reached the quarterfinals, with Garcia Ruiz and Quadre advancing to the semifinals. Garcia Ruiz’s journey was particularly impressive; she defeated competitors with scores of 6-0, 6-1, and 6-3, culminating in a comeback win over Arkansas’s Katarina Pavlechova.
In the semifinals, Garcia Ruiz won after a tough match against Kyoka Kubo from Kansas. Quadre, unfortunately, lost to Carolina Gomez Alonso of Arkansas. Both athletes qualified for the NCAA Championships in Orlando by reaching the finals.
Doubles matches proved equally exciting for the Sooners, with all remaining pairs reaching the quarterfinals. Garcia Ruiz and Quadre faced tough competition but took down several ranked teams to advance. Nöel and Nahum, after a thrilling comeback, secured a spot in the doubles final. However, they finished as runners-up after a hard-fought match against Gomez Alonso and Koskel.
The upcoming ITA Sectional Championship and Conference Masters Championships, set for November 6-9, promise to be thrilling events as the Sooners aim for further success this season.
Reflecting on the team’s performance, Coach T.J. McGowan noted, “The players showed great resilience. Every match tested their skills and willpower.” This blend of fight and teamwork highlights the potential for continued success as the season progresses.
