Eric Lu Triumphs at the Chopin Piano Competition
On October 21, 2025, American pianist Eric Lu secured the top prize at the famed International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw. The event, held every five years, is a major highlight in the classical music world, celebrating the legacy of composer Frederic Chopin.
Lu’s victory came after intense deliberation by a 17-member jury, led by renowned pianist Garrick Ohlsson. Lu received a €60,000 prize and a gold medal, funded by the President of Poland. Overcome with emotion, Lu expressed his gratitude, highlighting the support from Chopin enthusiasts worldwide.
His final performances included Chopin’s Polonaise-Fantasy in A-flat major and Piano Concerto in F minor. Although it was a competitive field with 84 participants from various countries, including China, Poland, and Japan, Lu stood out. The second prize went to Canadian Kevin Chen, with China’s Zitong Wang taking third place.
Born in 1998, Lu is a Curtis Institute graduate and a previous winner of the Leeds International Piano Competition in 2018. He has performed with major orchestras such as the Boston Symphony and the Chicago Symphony.
The Chopin Competition, established almost a century ago, is inspired by the Olympic Games. It’s held annually around October 17, marking the anniversary of Chopin’s death. The 2025 edition drew attention to musicians born between 1995 and 2009, with 11 finalists showcasing remarkable talent.
Amidst the backdrop of this fierce competition, social media buzzed with excitement. Fans and fellow musicians celebrated Lu’s win online. One user tweeted, “Proud of Eric Lu! His passion for Chopin shines through in every note!”
The landscape of classical music is evolving, with new artists like Lu refreshing the genre. Expert analysts note that competitions like these not only showcase talent but also inspire future generations of musicians. In a world where digital platforms allow instant access to performances, the next Chopin might be just a few clicks away.
