Netflix has secured the global rights to the well-loved board game Catan. This deal means the streaming giant will create live-action and animated films, TV series, and even video games inspired by the game, which was first unveiled in 1995 as The Settlers of Catan. Since then, it has sold over 45 million copies and been translated into more than 40 languages.
This marks the first time the vibrant island of Catan will come to life on screen. In the game, players navigate beautiful landscapes, form alliances, and manage scarce resources while avoiding robbers. It’s a blend of strategy and negotiation that has captured the hearts of many.
Jinny Howe, Netflix’s Head of Scripted Series for the U.S. and Canada, shared her excitement: “Anyone who has played Catan knows how its deep strategy opens up opportunities for intense drama.” She emphasizes that the collaboration will cater to both die-hard fans and newcomers.
Key figures behind the game, like Darren Kyman from Asmodee and Klaus Teuber’s sons, are involved in producing these projects, alongside Roy Lee from Vertigo Entertainment. Thomas Koegler, CEO of Asmodee, expressed enthusiasm about bringing Catan to a broader audience, emphasizing the game as a gateway into modern board gaming.
This partnership isn’t entirely new; Asmodee and Netflix have worked together before. They produced the 2024 French film Family Pack, based on another Asmodee card game. Additionally, Asmodee has crafted board games inspired by Netflix hits like Squid Game and Stranger Things.
Benjamin and Guido Teuber, Klaus Teuber’s sons, reflected on their father’s vision for Catan: a world where people connect by trading and building together. They see this collaboration with Netflix as a thrilling continuation of that vision.
Netflix’s foray into board game adaptations is expanding. Other notable projects include Arcane, based on the League of Legends universe, and an upcoming adaptation of Assassin’s Creed. The trend highlights how classic games can bridge into new media, creating fresh experiences for both old and new fans.
With such a vast cultural impact, Catan is poised to become a significant part of Netflix’s content lineup. As fans await these adaptations, they can look forward to a world that merges strategic gameplay with storytelling.
