Shepparton Student Wins Top Award in Statewide Environmental Competition!

A student from Greater Shepparton Secondary College has made waves in a photography competition focused on climate action. Year 7 student Savannah clinched first place in Sustainability Victoria’s “Through Your Own Lens” contest. The theme was “Building a Climate-Ready Future.” Her powerful photograph, titled *Future*, stood out among 90 entries from 28 different schools, earning her top honors in the Middle Years category.

Judges were impressed by Savannah’s image. They called it a “unanimous winner” for its striking impact. The clever use of darkness and contrast showcased not just technical skill but also deep emotion.

Savannah shared her thoughts on her work, emphasizing the vital role of her generation in addressing climate issues. “After years of creating damage to our climate, our generation and those who come after us will be the ones to change that,” she said. “Even something so small can make a huge difference.”

This competition encourages young people to express their views on environmental issues through creativity. Matt Genever, CEO of Sustainability Victoria, praised Savannah and other participants, highlighting how they are using art to raise awareness about climate change.

As part of the awards, winners received cash prizes to support sustainability projects at their schools, a framed print of their work, and an invitation to the 2026 ResourceSmart Schools Awards. Their artwork will feature in a special exhibition at the event.

This initiative is more than just a competition; it reflects a growing trend. Reports show that Gen Z is passionate about climate activism. According to a recent survey by McKinsey, 75% of young people are concerned about the climate crisis. They feel a strong desire to make a difference, often leading movements and engaging in sustainable practices.

As more young voices like Savannah’s emerge, society gains a clearer picture of the future they envision. It’s a future where creativity and awareness collide, fostering hope and prompting action to protect our planet.
