Hey everyone! I’m here to share some exciting updates about the Commander Format, focusing on the recent adjustments we’ve made based on your feedback.
In September, we held a unique event called the Commander Summit. It was a three-day gathering of the entire Commander Format Panel in Renton. We had some fantastic discussions regarding our strategies and what works well in the Commander community.
One of the main topics was our Bracket system. After nine months of use and three MagicCons, we’ve seen a lot of positive feedback. Players are more engaged than ever, and the data supports this. While we’ve had successes, there are areas that we can improve.
For example, one concern is the need for clearer guidelines. We want players to know what to expect in each bracket. It’s not just about the power level of your deck; it’s about the overall experience. Players should feel they can showcase their creativity and have thematic fun. For instance, Bracket 1 focuses heavily on themes rather than pure competition. We’re encouraging players to also create unique and thematic decks.
Another adjustment is how we handle “tutors” in the game. Initially, we placed limits on them across the brackets. However, we’ve realized that not all tutors operate the same way. Some are much weaker than others, and their presence can actually enhance gameplay instead of causing issues. Therefore, we’re lifting those restrictions and relying more on the Game Changers list to handle stronger tutors.
Speaking of Game Changers, we’ve also reevaluated our philosophy. These should be cards that significantly alter the game dynamics. We will continue to monitor and modify this list based on player experiences. Recently, we’ve removed some high-mana cards from this list because they can disrupt the speed of gameplay and lessen enjoyment in casual settings.
As we look ahead to 2026, we want more community input on proposed changes. For instance, we’re considering whether to create an additional Bracket. Some players have suggested adding a tier to provide more clarity in gameplay expectations. We’re keen to hear your thoughts!
In summary, Commander is thriving. We’re excited to continue making this format a fun and engaging space for everyone. We’ll keep listening to your feedback as we refine our systems and look forward to more discussions in the year ahead!
