China is making exciting strides in space travel with its first reusable rocket, the Zhuque-3. Recently, LandSpace conducted a successful static-fire test, a crucial step towards its first flight later this year.
During this test, the rocket fired its engines while still on the launch pad at the Dongfeng Commercial Space Innovation Pilot Zone. This marks the end of the initial phase of its flight campaign. The next steps will include vertical integration and further checks before the Zhuque-3 is ready for an orbital launch.
What sets Zhuque-3 apart is its design, reminiscent of SpaceX’s well-known Falcon 9. Both rockets feature a reusable first stage but differ in engine fuel. Zhuque-3’s engines, called Tianque-12As, run on liquid methane and liquid oxygen, contrasting with Falcon 9’s kerosene-based engines. Interestingly, SpaceX’s new Raptor engines also use methane, showcasing a potential shift in the industry towards this cleaner fuel option.
Standing at 217 feet tall, Zhuque-3 can lift about 40,350 pounds to low Earth orbit, which is quite similar to Falcon 9’s capacity. This places both rockets in direct competition as they aim to support a variety of space missions.
LandSpace has gained attention not only for Zhuque-3 but also for its other rocket, Zhuque-2, which recently became the first liquid oxygen-methane vehicle to reach orbit. While it faced setbacks with its latest launch, its earlier successes show promise for China’s growing space capabilities.
Experts in the space industry highlight the importance of reusable rockets in reducing costs and increasing launch frequency. According to a recent report, the global space economy could reach $1 trillion by 2040, with reusable technology playing a pivotal role in that growth.
