ASU Medical School Earns Prestigious Accreditation and Unveils Exciting New Name!

John Shufeldt dreamed of becoming a doctor since he was 5. He believes everyone should have access to healthcare, no matter where they start in life. This passion led him to become an emergency medicine physician and launch various health initiatives.

Recently, Shufeldt was inspired by President Michael Crow at Arizona State University discussing ASU Health. He was all in, eager to support efforts to change how healthcare is delivered and to help educate future health professionals. Shufeldt’s enthusiasm was palpable. “If it’s sweeping the floor, I’m in,” he said, excited about the future of this new medical school.

In a major boost, Shufeldt announced a substantial donation for the new John Shufeldt School of Medicine and Medical Engineering at ASU. This marks one of the largest gifts in the university’s history. Alongside this, ASU just received preliminary accreditation from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), which allows the school to start admitting students by fall 2026.

“Accreditation is significant,” Crow stated, acknowledging the hard work to achieve it. With these developments, enthusiasm is growing around ASU’s vision for healthcare.

Shufeldt’s credentials are impressive. He’s an MD, JD, and MBA, and he founded NextCare, an urgent care provider. His work has always aimed at addressing healthcare inequalities. He believes the future needs more innovative and compassionate doctors.

This new medical school is unique. Along with traditional medical training, students will also earn a Master of Science in medical engineering. They will learn to use tools like AI and data science, blending multiple disciplines to create forward-thinking healthcare professionals.

Dr. Holly Lisanby, the school’s founding dean, described Shufeldt’s gift as transformative. The school aims to immerse students in both medical and engineering cultures from the start, shaping them into leader-innovators in the healthcare space.
