Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier was arrested early Thursday in Orlando, facing serious charges in a federal investigation into sports betting and money laundering. This case reportedly involved betting on NBA games using confidential player information, like injuries.
U.S. Attorney Joseph Nocella stated that Rozier is one of six defendants in a significant federal case that connects illegal gambling to organized crime networks. Nocella emphasized, “Violating the law is a losing proposition.” Later that day, Rozier was released after posting $6 million bail.
Rozier is accused of using nonpublic information to trick sportsbooks, placing bets he had an unfair advantage on. He faces charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering. FBI Director Kash Patel described the operation as a wide-reaching criminal network that crossed into the NBA. He referred to it as “historic” in its scope and methods.
Rozier’s attorney, James Trusty, criticized how the authorities handled the arrest. He claimed Rozier had cooperated and should have been allowed to turn himself in peacefully. Trusty noted that Rozier was previously labeled a “subject, not a target” of the investigation, and he accused authorities of seeking publicity rather than justice. “They wanted the misplaced glory of embarrassing a professional athlete,” he argued.
This arrest came right after the Heat’s season opener against the Orlando Magic, in which Rozier did not play. The Heat have yet to publicly address the situation.
Rozier isn’t alone in this legal predicament. Former NBA player Damon Jones, who played for the Miami Heat in 2004, was also arrested as part of the same investigation. In another case, 31 people were charged for running illegal poker games with ties to organized crime families in New York, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and Miami. Officials revealed that this network included notorious crime families like the Bonanno and Gambino families.
Both Rozier and Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups have been placed on administrative leave by the NBA while the investigation continues. The league stated, “We take these allegations with the utmost seriousness,” highlighting their commitment to the integrity of the game.
Earlier this year, former NBA player Gilbert Arenas was arrested for allegedly operating an illegal gambling ring out of his California home.
Terry Rozier’s basketball journey began with the Boston Celtics, where he gained recognition for his defensive skills and clutch performances. Drafted in 2015, he shone during the 2017-18 playoffs, averaging over 16 points per game. After several successful seasons with the Charlotte Hornets, he joined the Miami Heat in 2024.
