Jessica Goeller, DO, has been chosen as the new president of the American Osteopathic College of Anesthesiologists (AOCA). She is the vice chair and chief of pediatric anesthesiology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC). Dr. Goeller officially took on this role during the AOCA’s annual meeting in Savannah, Georgia, in September 2025. Her term will last until October 2026.
Dr. Goeller has been part of AOCA’s leadership since 2020, contributing significantly by serving on its Board of Governors and chairing a major national meeting. This year, she emphasized her pride in representing the anesthesia profession. She is the first board-certified pediatric anesthesiologist and full professor at UNMC to hold this position as an osteopathic physician. She believes her unique background helps enhance the organization’s leadership and its connections.
Founded in 1952, AOCA aims to support osteopathic anesthesiologists through education and advocacy. Dr. Goeller pointed out that the organization welcomes both MDs and DOs, fostering a sense of community among professionals from various backgrounds.
As she steps into the presidency, Dr. Goeller’s main focus is on advancing education, mentorship, and technology in anesthesiology. She stated, “Our future depends on investing in the next generation of anesthesiologists.” This includes creating special interest groups for medical students and early-career doctors, fostering engagement, and providing valuable opportunities for growth.
Dr. Goeller also recognizes the importance of incorporating technology, particularly artificial intelligence, into anesthesiology. “If we stick to old methods, we risk falling behind,” she noted.
One notable aspect of her presidency is that she is one of only six women to lead AOCA in its history. Her perspective as a pediatric anesthesiologist is invaluable, as she frequently collaborates with young patients and their families, cultivating trust and empathy.
In addition to education, she is focused on mentorship and the well-being of the anesthesia workforce. Dr. Goeller stressed that wellness is now a non-negotiable priority. “We’re ensuring that well-being is part of education and leadership,” she explained.
Recent surveys indicate that burnout is prevalent among medical professionals, making wellness initiatives even more critical. Statistics show that nearly 40% of healthcare workers report feeling burned out, which can impact patient care and job satisfaction.
Dr. Goeller aims to create a lasting impact during her presidency, inspiring others to prioritize inclusivity and continuous growth. “I want to honor the legacy of those before me while embracing new perspectives,” she said.
