BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — This season in college football, no one has dominated like Indiana. They’ve won two conference games by over 50 points, making headlines in the process.
On Saturday, the second-ranked Hoosiers crushed UCLA 56-6, just a month after a 53-point victory over Illinois.
Head coach Curt Cignetti shared the team’s mindset: “We approach every play as if the score is tied. That’s our mentality.”
Indiana’s linebacker Aiden Fisher set the tone early with an interception return for a touchdown on UCLA’s second play. By halftime, the Hoosiers were leading 35-3. They continued their momentum into the second half with a strong drive, showcasing their power. With the game in hand, they rested many starters, including star quarterback Fernando Mendoza, who quickly put together a solid performance before stepping aside for his younger brother, Alberto.
“UCLA is tough,” said Fernando Mendoza, who threw for 168 yards and four touchdowns. “We knew we had to start strong to keep their energy down.”
Before this game, UCLA had been on a three-game winning streak, including an impressive upset over Penn State. But Indiana’s defense stifled them, limiting the Bruins to just 201 total yards. Cignetti noted that a combination of their strong running game (262 rushing yards) and defense broke UCLA’s spirit. “You can see when a team is ready to give up,” he added. “It often happens by the third quarter.”
This victory placed Indiana in a unique position. They became the first Power 4 school to record two 50-point conference wins in a single season since Clemson did it in 2018. That year, Clemson went on to finish 15-0 and claim the national championship.
Recent discussions on social media highlight how fans are buzzing about Indiana’s impressive performances and Mendoza’s Heisman candidacy. Analysts have pointed out that maintaining this level of performance could set them up for a historic season. Stats show that teams with strong defenses and prolific rushing games — like Indiana — often excel in the later parts of the season.
As the Hoosiers continue their push, they have the momentum and attention of college football fans nationwide. Their blend of powerful offense and steadfast defense could make them a force to reckon with in the coming games, and the spotlight is shining brightly on their path to potential glory.
