Just a day after a tough loss to Texas A&M, rumors are swirling about LSU football coach Brian Kelly’s future. Sources tell The Athletic that he might be on his way out after the Tigers dropped to a disappointing record of 3 losses in 4 games this season.
There’s a sense of urgency among LSU’s leaders. Governor Jeff Landry even met with the school’s Board of Supervisors to discuss the situation. A team meeting is scheduled for later tonight, possibly to address concerns about performance and direction.
LSU Athletic Director Scott Woodward reportedly wants Kelly to make changes to his coaching staff, specifically asking him to let go of offensive coordinator Joe Sloan. However, discussions between Kelly and Woodward turned tense when Kelly proposed other staff adjustments that Woodward wasn’t keen on. According to one source, “It went bad fast.”
Talks have even surfaced about negotiating a settlement for Kelly’s hefty $53 million buyout. However, whether the board will support this move remains unclear, especially since LSU is operating under interim president Matt Lee, who took over in May.
When Kelly joined LSU, expectations were high. The team started the season ranked No. 9, with Kelly saying the roster cost a whopping $18 million to put together—more than tripling the investment from the previous year. His ambitions were clear: “We’re taking receipts… and we’ll see you at the national championship,” he declared last winter after a decent season.
Despite the hopes, Kelly’s record stands at 34-14, with a lackluster 5-11 record against ranked teams. His offense struggles, sitting at 105th nationally for rushing yards per carry and 83rd in scoring.
Players will have time off Monday as the Tigers prepare for a tough matchup against No. 4 Alabama on November 8.
Football experts are closely watching this situation. According to a recent survey by ESPN, 67% of college football fans believe coaching changes are essential at programs not meeting expectations. As social media buzz continues about Kelly’s future, LSU’s decision-making will likely shape the program’s path for years to come.
