TEHRAN – The head of Iran’s Department of Environment, Shina Ansari, recently spoke about how peace and the environment are essential for humanity’s survival. In her view, lasting peace cannot exist without a healthy environment, and vice versa.
During a meeting in Tehran to celebrate United Nations Development Day, Ansari highlighted the world’s pressing issues: wars, environmental crises, climate change, and economic inequality. She pointed out that these threats don’t spare any nation.
Ansari emphasized that environmental damage leads to food shortages, poverty, and political instability. Wars, she stated, are particularly harmful to both regional and global ecosystems. For instance, ongoing conflicts in West Asia have not only caused human suffering but also environmental destruction—polluting water and soil and harming crops and forests.
Despite international sanctions that limit Iran’s access to financial resources and new technologies, Ansari said the country is committed to combating climate change and reducing carbon emissions. She believes that to tackle the climate crisis effectively, nations must work together in solidarity.
On a broader scale, the significance of United Nations Day on October 24 cannot be understated. This day commemorates the adoption of the UN Charter in 1945, which marked the establishment of the United Nations—a body that continues to symbolize hope for global unity and cooperation.
In today’s ever-changing world, the call for nations to collaborate has never been more urgent. Ansari stresses that protecting our planet requires a commitment to peace, justice, and cooperation. After all, the Earth is our shared home, and it’s up to us to protect it wisely.
Recent surveys suggest that many people around the world also hold this belief. According to a 2022 report by the Pew Research Center, over 60% of respondents agree that environmental issues are directly linked to international peace, highlighting a growing awareness of this critical relationship.
As we navigate challenges like climate change and conflict, adopting a united approach will be key to ensuring a sustainable future for all.
