During a recent chat at The New Yorker Festival, Demi Moore shared her memories of rehearsing for the movie A Few Good Men while eight months pregnant with her daughter, Scout. She recalled feeling that Tom Cruise was “quite embarrassed” during those sessions.
“I could tell he felt it was a bit awkward,” she said, adding that she felt fine moving around. At the time, not many of their peers in Hollywood were balancing careers and motherhood, which added to the discomfort.
Moore reflected on the stigma surrounding mothers in the film industry. “It didn’t make sense to me,” she explained, as she tried to challenge the notion that women couldn’t have both a successful career and a family. Yet, this belief also piled pressure onto her as she sought to prove that it was possible.
Looking back, Moore admitted she became “a bit of an overachiever” during that period. “What was I trying to prove?” she questioned, considering the challenges of breastfeeding and rehearsing scenes simultaneously.
After giving birth, she felt even more pressure to get in shape for the film. “I did a two-and-a-half-hour hike the day my water broke,” she noted, revealing her intense dedication to fitness.
Today, Moore feels that mothers receive much better support on Hollywood sets, signaling a positive change in the industry. According to a 2022 study by the Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film, the representation of women in film has improved significantly, with more stories being told that embrace motherhood and professional aspirations.
