CINCINNATI – Food banks are bracing for a surge in need as the federal food aid program faces cuts. The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced that SNAP benefits will halt starting November 1 due to the government shutdown.
Currently, over 1.4 million people in Ohio rely on SNAP to put food on the table. In Southwest Ohio alone, 346,589 individuals benefit, totaling more than $56 million in federal support. Hamilton County has the highest number of users in the area.
With the announcement, the Ohio Benefits Program warns residents that they might not receive their usual SNAP benefits this coming November. According to Kam McKenzie, SNAP Outreach Manager at the Freestore Foodbank, this could lead to more people seeking help. Nearly half of those who visit their pantry already use SNAP.
McKenzie notes, “Taking away that supplement means we’re likely to see many more coming through our doors.” This includes recent furloughed federal workers who are reaching out for assistance.
The Freestore Foodbank is not only preparing for increased demand but also facing a drop in donations. “Inflation has reduced the disposable income for many smaller donors,” McKenzie explains.
In addition to food aid, the Freestore Foodbank offers support with SNAP applications, helping around 10,000 families each year. This support is crucial, especially for families facing unexpected changes like job loss or increased household size due to the opioid crisis.
Historically, government shutdowns have led to similar challenges. For instance, during the 2018-19 shutdown, food banks in several states experienced skyrocketing demands, highlighting the vital role these organizations play.
