Join the Movement: 581 New Participants Sign Up for 4MyCiTy Amid SNAP Cutbacks and Rising Government Shutdown Challenges

Baltimore’s nonprofit organization, 4MyCiTy, is experiencing a surge in demand for food assistance as more people enroll in their programs. This increase comes as SNAP benefits are set to end soon, creating concern for many families in need.

Troy McPherson from 4MyCiTy reported a dramatic rise in new participants. “Since the start of the month, we’ve had 581 new sign-ups,” he shared. People from various backgrounds are seeking help, including young adults in their twenties to seniors in their seventies. Many federal workers, such as those from schools and the postal service, are also turning to food assistance.

In Maryland, around 121,000 adults over the age of 62 depend on SNAP benefits each month. The Maryland Department of Aging warns that losing access to these benefits could lead to serious health issues due to food insecurity.

As the holiday season approaches, McPherson stresses the urgency of addressing this growing need. “Thanksgiving is coming up, and we want to support as many families as possible,” he said.

In a broader context, the state’s Attorney General, Anthony Brown, is part of a coalition of 22 attorneys general challenging the Trump Administration over the cuts to SNAP. This reflects a nationwide concern about food security, especially among vulnerable populations.

Food insecurity is a pressing issue. Recent data from the USDA shows that 10.5% of U.S. households were food insecure at some point in 2021. This issue is compounded by rising inflation, which has made food more expensive and further strained family budgets.
