Colin Farrell recently opened up on “The Late Show” with Stephen Colbert about his tough experience while filming “Minority Report.” He revealed that Tom Cruise wasn’t pleased with him during the production, which took place when Farrell was struggling with substance abuse.
The drama unfolded on his birthday, May 31, when he begged the production team not to make him work. Sadly, he had a 6 a.m. pickup, and he admits he was out late the night before celebrating. “I remember getting into bed, and as soon as I turned off the light the phone rang. It was the driver saying, ‘It’s 10 past 6.’”
When he arrived at the set looking disheveled, the assistant director, David H. Venghaus Jr., stopped him, saying, “You can’t go to the set like this.” Farrell, still in a rough state, simply requested some beers and cigarettes to get through the day.
He managed to push through but recalled, “We did 46 takes.” It was a tough day—he struggled to deliver a complex line: “I’m sure you’ve all grasped the fundamental paradox of pre-crime methodology.”
Despite the challenges, “Minority Report” became a major hit, grossing over $358 million worldwide. The film, inspired by Philip K. Dick’s novella, explores a future where psychics help prevent crimes before they happen. Farrell plays an agent working under Cruise’s character, who is wrongfully accused.
