YORK COUNTY, Pa. — With the federal government halting SNAP benefits for November due to the ongoing shutdown, the York County Food Bank is stepping up to help low-income seniors.
The food bank runs a Senior Food Box Program. Eligible seniors can receive a free monthly box filled with essential items like milk, juice, canned meats, cereal, rice, pasta, beans, and more. This initiative aims to support those who need it most during tough times.
Jennifer Brillhart, President and CEO of the York County Food Bank, emphasized, “We want every senior in York County to know: help is available. This is an unprecedented time, and we are committed to making sure our older neighbors are nourished and supported.”
To join the program, seniors need to call the food bank at (717) 846-6435 or fill out a registration form online. Eligible seniors must be at least 60 years old and meet specific income requirements.
After registration, seniors can pick up their food boxes at several drive-thru sites or have them delivered. Notably, for November, DoorDash will cover the cost of delivering these boxes as part of its Emergency Food Response. This initiative highlights the community’s commitment to ensuring no senior goes hungry during this challenging time.
Food insecurity among seniors remains a pressing issue. According to a recent study by the National Council on Aging, nearly 10 million seniors face hunger in the U.S. This is a significant concern, especially with rising living costs and inflation. The York County Food Bank’s efforts reflect a larger trend of local organizations rallying to support vulnerable populations during crises.
If you know a senior who might benefit from this program, please share this information. Every little bit helps in ensuring that our neighbors are taken care of.
