LOS ANGELES — Pasadena and the Rose Bowl Operating Company are taking legal action against UCLA. They claim the university is trying to move its college football games from the historic Rose Bowl to the newer SoFi Stadium in Inglewood. The Rose Bowl has been home to the Bruins for over 40 years.
The lawsuit argues that UCLA’s approach is a significant betrayal. Although UCLA has a lease with the Rose Bowl through 2044, attendance has dropped recently. This season, their average attendance is around 35,000 fans for home games, which is concerning for a school with such a rich football history.
SoFi Stadium, which opened in 2020, is closer to campus and has a larger capacity of over 70,000. Pasadena officials are worried about financial losses if UCLA relocates. They estimate that moving could cost the city and its residents more than $1 billion. This includes over $150 million spent on stadium renovations supported by taxpayers.
The Rose Bowl, a National Historic Landmark, is recognized for hosting the Rose Bowl Game since 1922. UCLA has played there since 1982, making it a deeply rooted part of the college’s identity.
In recent years, UCLA has undergone several changes, moving to the Big Ten Conference and making significant shifts in coaching staff. These moves have raised questions about the university’s direction and commitment to its traditions.
David L. Scrader, UCLA’s attorney, argues that discussions about relocating don’t violate their contract. However, Pasadena officials feel strongly about preserving the Rose Bowl’s legacy. They emphasize that some traditions are too important to sacrifice for financial gain.
