The Korean government is making a big push to strengthen its AI infrastructure. They’re rolling out over 50,000 advanced NVIDIA GPUs across various sectors, including the National AI Computing Center and major cloud services like NHN Cloud, Kakao Corp., and NAVER Cloud. Alongside this, companies like Samsung, SK Group, and Hyundai are also investing heavily in AI by building factories equipped with thousands of GPUs. This collaboration aims to enhance AI capabilities across key industries, such as automotive and telecommunications.
Jensen Huang, the CEO of NVIDIA, highlighted Korea’s position in the AI revolution. He stated that just as Korea has excelled in manufacturing ships and electronics, it can now export intelligence through AI technology. Meanwhile, Bae Kyung-hoon, Korea’s Deputy Prime Minister, emphasized that this effort is crucial for making South Korea one of the top three global AI leaders.
According to a recent study, South Korea is expected to increase its investments in AI by 30% over the next five years. This funding will focus on areas like semiconductor development and smart factories. Research institutes and startups will also have access to a sovereign infrastructure to build new AI applications. This plans to create a robust ecosystem that supports innovation and research.
Additionally, NVIDIA is teaming up with local companies and universities to develop new technologies like AI-driven radio access networks (AI-RAN) and 6G infrastructure. This collaboration aims to make networks more efficient and reduce costs while extending battery life for devices.
On the manufacturing front, Samsung is working on a state-of-the-art AI factory to enhance semiconductor production. This will involve technologies that improve manufacturing processes and speed. SK Group and Hyundai are taking similar steps, with Hyundai investing approximately $3 billion into AI initiatives to foster smart factories.
The partnerships extend to the development of language models as well. Working with NVIDIA, entities like LG and NAVER Cloud are focusing on building strong language processing models tailored for various uses, ensuring that AI serves both businesses and the public.
Moreover, groundbreaking research in quantum computing is also on the agenda. The Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI) is collaborating with NVIDIA to create a Center of Excellence. This center will focus on using the national supercomputer to advance scientific research and deepen knowledge in quantum computing.
As part of these efforts, a new startup alliance has been established to support emerging businesses. Through the NVIDIA Inception program, startups will gain access to essential resources and expertise, which is critical for driving innovation and economic growth in the region.
With all these developments, South Korea is proving it isn’t just catching up in AI, it’s setting the pace. This ambitious investment marks a significant step toward creating the world’s next AI powerhouse.
