Students at Alamosa Elementary recently showed incredible generosity, collecting 778 pounds of food for the Food Bank Network of the San Luis Valley during their annual Halloween Food Drive. These donations are vital, especially as many families in the Valley will soon face the suspension of SNAP benefits starting November 1. Before this change, one in four locals already relied on the Food Bank Network at least once a year. According to Annalisa Baer, director of the Food Bank Network, “Hunger is a significant issue here. Seeing students give back to their community is heartwarming.” This outreach is essential, particularly since over three-quarters of students at Alamosa Elementary qualify for free or reduced lunch, highlighting that the need for food assistance is felt even among the students themselves.
Data suggests that food insecurity is a prevalent concern. Recent reports show that 1 in 8 Americans faces hunger, and among children, that number rises dramatically. This makes efforts like the food drive even more critical. It not only helps replenish local food pantries but also teaches students the importance of community and giving back.
To further engage with the community, the Food Bank Network welcomes donations at its Alamosa location from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays. They accept a range of items, including dried beans, canned vegetables, and frozen meats, ensuring contributions can cater to diverse needs.
