Minister Manal Awad from Egypt met with Canada’s Environment Minister Julie Dabrusin to discuss climate action and environmental policies. Their conversation happened during the 9th Ministerial Meeting on Climate Action in Canada.
Awad highlighted the strong partnership between Egypt and Canada in tackling climate issues. She expressed a desire for even more collaboration on climate adaptation, funding green projects, and building institutional capacity.
The ministers shared their priorities for the upcoming COP30 climate summit in Brazil. They stressed the need for progress in climate finance, technology transfer, and skill development in line with the Paris Agreement. Awad pointed out that developing countries, especially in Africa, require support to handle climate impacts. Accessible funding is crucial, and she noted the significance of the Just Transition Work Programme, which links ambitious goals with practical actions.
They also discussed the Global Plastics Treaty. Awad emphasized that focusing on product design is essential for reducing plastic waste. She made it clear that Egypt opposes direct production limits and reaffirms the need for independent funding and sustainable economic alternatives.
Dabrusin praised Egypt’s role in climate diplomacy, especially during COP27 held in Sharm El-Sheikh. She showed Canada’s eagerness to further cooperation with Egypt on sustainable development and global environmental challenges.
Having strong partnerships is more important than ever, especially as studies show that climate change impacts are accelerating. According to a recent report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), severe weather events are more frequent, making collaboration between nations critical.
