The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has appointed three new leaders to oversee its work in artificial intelligence (AI), technology, and data.
As announced on the department’s website, Alicia Rouault steps in as the associate deputy assistant secretary for technology policy and chief technology officer. Kristen Honey is now the chief data officer, and Meghan Dierks will serve as the chief artificial intelligence officer.
This change follows a reorganization of HHS’s focus on health, data, AI, and cybersecurity announced in July. The technology, data, and AI functions have shifted from the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Administration to the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology. Micky Tripathi now leads this office as both the national coordinator and assistant secretary for technology policy.
After the reorganization, Tripathi highlighted that filling these key roles was a top priority. Dierks has been with HHS since December 30, while Rouault and Honey began their roles recently.
Rouault came from the U.S. Digital Service, where she led efforts to assist Americans experiencing financial difficulties and supported state responses during the COVID-19 pandemic. Her experience also includes roles at the General Services Administration and as a senior adviser at Code for America. As CTO, she will oversee the newly formed Office of the Chief Technology Officer.
Honey, the new chief data officer, initially helped establish her office during the pandemic and has held pivotal roles at HHS, focusing on data science and COVID-19 diagnostics. She also has a background in policy from her time in the White House.
Dierks brings a wealth of experience from both industry and academia. Before her new position, she was chief data officer at Komodo Health, where she developed AI-driven healthcare tools. She has also been a professor at Harvard Medical School since 2001 and has worked with the FDA early in her career.
This transition occurs as the federal government emphasizes the importance of AI roles, marking a new chapter for HHS in its technological initiatives.
