In Hancock County, Mississippi, a church made a big difference for families in need by giving away thousands of pounds of food. This event took place on a Monday afternoon, and it’s not the first time they’ve done this.
Pastor Allen Jenkins from First Missionary Baptist Church in Bay St. Louis shared, “The need is great. Food prices are higher than usual, and we want to help families get a little relief.” This marked the fourth collaboration between the church and Feeding the Gulf Coast to provide food assistance.
During the food giveaway, cars lined up at the local farmers market. Last month, they helped about 1,600 families. Jenkins emphasized the importance of their mission by quoting Jesus: “I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat.”
Just a short drive away on Highway 603, the Hancock County Food Pantry has increased its operating days from two to five a week due to rising demand. “We are now serving almost 600 families each month,” said Samantha Jones, the volunteer coordinator. She noted that the tough economy has impacted many, resulting in a growing homeless population and people revisiting the pantry for support.
Both the church and the food pantry are vital resources for the community, helping families put food on their tables during these challenging times.
