Certain orcas have developed a unique liking for a specific delicacy: the livers of great white sharks. Recent research in the Gulf of California has captured some dramatic moments where these intelligent whales outsmart their prey.

In videos taken during orca hunts, scientists observed these majestic creatures striking at young great whites. They flip the sharks upside down, which stuns them, and then they extract the liver. This remarkable behavior was documented by marine biologist Erick Higuera-Rivas, who initially didn’t grasp the importance of what he filmed until he reviewed the footage. He shared his astonishment upon realizing that the targeted shark was a great white.

Heather Bowlby, a research scientist who wasn’t involved in the study, noted that these findings offer a fresh perspective on the food chain. Often, we think of great whites as the paramount predators in the ocean, but this research shows they too can be prey.

The orcas involved in these hunts are part of a group known as the Moctezuma pod. They focus primarily on hunting marine animals like sharks and other large fish. Over the past decade, Higuera-Rivas has tracked their behavior and seen how they adapt their hunting tactics based on their targets.

Interestingly, similar orca behavior was previously noted in South Africa, where orcas have been known to prey on adult great whites. In Mexico, however, the Moctezuma pod seems to focus on younger sharks. This difference might indicate that these groups are developing their own hunting strategies based on local conditions.

The orca’s technique involves flipping the shark to induce a state of “tonic immobility,” essentially paralyzing it momentarily. This makes it much easier for the orcas to access the liver, which is a nutritious energy source that accounts for a significant portion of a shark’s body mass.

Recent studies also suggest climate change may influence these interactions. In the past decade, there’s been an uptick in great white sightings in the Gulf of California, possibly driven by changing ocean temperatures. This shift can have broader implications on marine ecosystems, especially if the presence of orcas begins to displace these apex predators, just like in South Africa.

In that region, repeated orca attacks have caused great whites to abandon their usual feeding and breeding grounds, leading to significant shifts in the local marine life. Their absence has allowed other species, like cape fur seals, to flourish, which in turn affects the entire food chain.

As technology continues to improve, researchers now have better tools to observe and understand these complex predator-prey dynamics. The combination of advanced filming techniques and ongoing climate changes makes it a fascinating time to study marine life. The behavior of orcas in both Mexico and South Africa showcases not just their intelligence, but also how adaptable and resourceful these creatures are in response to their environment.
