Join the Excitement: University of Iowa’s 24-Hour Dance Marathon Kickoff Event Kicks Off This Monday Night!

IOWA CITY, Iowa – For over 30 years, the Dance Marathon at the University of Iowa has made a significant impact, raising millions to support children in need. The D2DM event, kicking off Monday at 9 p.m., is a key part of this effort and energizes students ahead of the main marathon in February.

The D2DM, hosted at the Iowa Memorial Union, is not just a gathering; it’s the largest fundraising day for the month. “We celebrate every single dollar raised,” said Campbell Wood, the Executive Director of Dance Marathon. “Each dollar helps provide treatments and meals for families, allowing them to enjoy meals outside the hospital.”

As part of the Children’s Miracle Network, a significant portion of the funds goes to the Stead Family Children’s Hospital. Last year alone, the Dance Marathon raised over $1.5 million. With expectations high, this year’s team is determined to follow in the footsteps of their predecessors. “There’s definitely pressure, knowing how many children and families depend on the funds we gather each year,” Wood explained. “But every dollar is a victory, and we value all contributions.”

For Wood, in her final year at the university, this event holds personal significance. “I wanted to be part of Dance Marathon even before I arrived at Iowa,” she shared. “It was a major factor in my decision to come here.”

D2DM lasts 24 hours, wrapping up Tuesday night. This tradition not only raises funds but also fosters a sense of community and purpose among students, creating lasting memories while supporting vital causes.

Interestingly, studies show that student involvement in such initiatives boosts leadership skills and civic engagement. According to a survey from the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators, 54% of students involved in charitable activities reported increased academic performance and a stronger connection to their university. Events like D2DM create a ripple effect, encouraging students to take on leadership roles while fostering empathy and teamwork.

As we watch D2DM unfold, it’s clear that this event is more than just fundraising—it’s about coming together to support a cause that touches lives and strengthens the community.
