Bugonia – Film Review
by Fran Winston
Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, “Bugonia” features a unique storyline with Jesse Plemons, Aidan Delbis, and Emma Stone. The film hit cinemas on October 31.
Before watching, I knew little beyond the trailers. The story centers on Teddy Gatz (Plemons) and his neurodivergent cousin Don (Deblis), who kidnap Michelle Fuller (Stone), CEO of Auxolith, a pharmaceutical company. They think she’s an alien and go so far as to shave her hair to stop her from contacting her “mother ship.”
From the promos, it seemed unclear how two hours of interrogation could hold anyone’s interest. Even the name “Bugonia” refers to an ancient Greek belief about how bees emerged from dead cattle, making it seem disconnected from the plot.
However, Yorgos is known for his unpredictable and absurdist storytelling. I went in cautious but left surprisingly entertained. The film reveals more layers as it unfolds. We learn that Teddy actually works for Michelle’s company, and his mother is in a coma due to one of their drugs. This twist adds depth to the narrative.
Plemons and Stone shine together, balancing intensity with wit. Don’s character adds an element of innocence and increases the tension, as he relates to their hostage. The story is mostly set in Teddy and Don’s cramped home, which enhances the feeling of confinement and keeps viewers engaged.
However, I felt the last five minutes were unnecessary. The story had reached a natural conclusion, and the extra scenes felt forced.
Overall, I enjoyed “Bugonia” much more than expected. The performances stand out as masterclasses in acting, and the dialogue snaps with energy. While the film touches on serious themes about our planet, it’s woven into Teddy’s conspiracy theorist beliefs, making it fit seamlessly into the plot.
Interestingly, as of 2023, there’s been growing interest in films that blend dark humor with serious topics. According to a recent survey by the National Cinema Association, 68% of moviegoers now seek films that provoke thought while entertaining. “Bugonia” falls right into this trend.
In a world where every story seems familiar, “Bugonia” offers a refreshing take that manages to balance comedy with weighty themes. It’s an entertaining watch that sparked discussions among viewers online, with many praising its unique approach and unexpected twists.
