This program, known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, helps families afford groceries. In Palm Beach County alone, over 166,000 people depend on it.
Local leaders gathered at the Palm Beach County Food Bank to address this pressing issue. They emphasized the importance of community awareness and support. “Our goal is to ensure residents have the information they need about this federal change,” said Joseph Abruzzo, the Palm Beach County Administrator.
To assist families facing food insecurity, several organizations, including the United Way of Palm Beach County and the Palm Beach County Food Bank, are stepping up. They have created resources to help families locate food pantries and meal sites quickly.
The United Way offers a Food Finder Map that uses technology to show nearby food sources. This tool lists addresses, contact information, and eligibility requirements. “It’s essential for families to know where they can find help,” said Dr. Laura George, CEO of United Way of Palm Beach County.
Interestingly, this map isn’t new; it was developed during the COVID-19 pandemic to help those struggling with food access. Since then, it has logged over 550,000 visits, which highlights the ongoing need for food assistance.
With rising grocery costs, the demand at the Palm Beach County Food Bank has continued to increase. CEO Jamie Kendall acknowledged that while they can’t cover the entire gap left by SNAP, they’re committed to ensuring no one goes hungry. “We want everyone, regardless of their background, to find support here,” Kendall said.
Maria Sachs, a Palm Beach County Commissioner, reinforced the community spirit. “Together, we strive to support our residents, no matter what challenges arise,” she explained.
As more families seek assistance in the coming weeks, officials stress the vital need for volunteers and donations. They also recommend calling 2-1-1 for additional resources.
