Don’t Miss the Thrilling Showdown: Montour vs. Moon for 1st Place in WPIAL Sports on Jan. 14, 2025!

The WPIAL boys basketball scene heats up this week as section play wraps up with some exciting matchups. Currently, Montour leads Section 4-5A, holding strong with a 4-0 section record and an overall record of 9-1. They’ve bounced back with three consecutive wins since a holiday loss in Tampa Bay, and they are set to take on Moon, which is the defending Class 5A champion.

Meanwhile, Moon stands at 4-1 in section play and 11-2 overall, just half a game behind Chartiers Valley, which leads with a 12-1 record and 5-1 in the section. A thrilling game to keep an eye on is Montour versus Moon on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. on Trib HSSN.

Section 3-2A is another nail-biter where five of the eight teams are close in ranking. No team remains undefeated, and the top contenders, Jefferson-Morgan (9-3) and Chartiers-Houston (10-2), will clash for the lead. Jefferson-Morgan currently has a 5-1 record, while Chartiers-Houston sits at 4-1 and has a make-up game pending.

Additionally, Beth-Center (4-2, 7-5) will face West Greene (4-2, 6-6). Both teams share second place alongside Fort Cherry (6-6) at 4-2. It’s shaping up to be a competitive evening on the court.

Other sections are also bringing the heat with matchups that could shift the standings:

  • Section 2-5A: Penn Hills (5-6) visits Kiski Area (6-6). Currently, Penn Hills is in first at 5-0.
  • Section 1-4A: Deer Lakes (12-2) travels to North Catholic (9-5) for a chance to tighten the race. Deer Lakes leads at 5-0.
  • Section 2-4A: Avonworth (10-2) goes against Beaver (11-3). Avonworth is top with a 4-0 record, edging out Beaver at 3-1.
  • Section 3-4A: Derry (8-4) faces Elizabeth Forward (10-3). Elizabeth holds the top spot at 5-0.
  • Section 4-2A: Neshannock (11-1) hosts Union (5-1, 11-3) for control of the section with Neshannock at 6-0.
  • Section 1-A: Aquinas Academy (12-1) welcomes Nazareth Prep (9-3). Both teams are neck and neck at 4-0.

With so many critical games, this week is sure to keep basketball fans on the edge of their seats. Every game counts as teams battle for the top positions in their sections!
