The Miami Dolphins and Philadelphia Eagles have made a significant trade: linebacker Jaelan Phillips is headed to Philadelphia in exchange for a 2026 third-round pick. This pick is one the Eagles originally owned, not one acquired through prior trades.
Phillips was drafted 18th overall by the Dolphins in 2021. He quickly became a valuable player, appearing in every game that year, notching 8.5 sacks and 42 tackles. His strong start continued into 2022, where he played 15 games and added seven more sacks to his stats.
Unfortunately, injuries have hindered Phillips’ progress. In 2023, he started strong with 6.5 sacks but suffered a torn Achilles, ending his season early. He returned in 2024, but another knee injury limited him to just four games.
Despite these setbacks, the Dolphins picked up his fifth-year option, keeping him under contract until 2025. However, 2025 has been challenging for Phillips as well. He’s managed only three sacks in nine games amid a tumultuous season for the team.
The Eagles are looking to bolster their pass rush, especially after losing key players like Josh Sweat and Bryce Huff this offseason. They’ve had trouble generating pressure, achieving only 4.5 sacks from their edge rushers so far this season. With defensive coordinator Vic Fangio’s system in mind, Phillips could be a crucial addition, especially since he has experience in it from 2023.
Phillips will turn 27 in May, making him eligible for a contract extension soon. His past injuries might affect his market value, but if he stays healthy, he could be a key player for the Eagles in the future. If he doesn’t sign with the Eagles long-term, he would count toward the compensatory pick formula, possibly benefiting the team in the 2027 draft.
