Students at Louisiana Tech University are gaining a fresh perspective on technical communication through a new partnership with Oslo Metropolitan University in Norway. The program, called Engineering Communication in Global Contexts, aims to boost students’ skills in a global engineering environment.
This collaboration began with online courses in spring 2024. In the fall, five Louisiana Tech students and two from OsloMet took the chance to study abroad for a quarter. K. R. Ray, a Louisiana Tech student in Norway, shared, “This exchange has really opened my eyes to the grand scale of global technical communication. Knowing your audience, including their cultural differences, is key to creating engaging content.”
The program combines technical writing with intercultural understanding, exploring effective strategies for global professional communication. Dr. Kirk St.Amant, a professor involved in the initiative, explained, “We are part of an interconnected global society. This program equips students with skills for success in an international context.”
A major goal of the initiative is to establish internships and research partnerships between the U.S. and Norway, providing students with opportunities to apply their new skills in real-world settings. This project is supported by a $300,000 grant from the Norwegian Directorate for Higher Education and Skills, awarded to Dr. St.Amant and Pavel Zemliansky from OsloMet.
Recent studies highlight the importance of cross-cultural communication skills in the workplace. According to a report from the World Economic Forum, almost 70% of employers recognize the growing need for such skills in the increasingly globalized job market. Disparities in cultural communication styles can lead to misunderstandings, making these skills even more vital.
