Can ‘Predator: Badlands’ Revitalize Autumn Box Office with Over $60M Global Opening? Here’s What You Need to Know!

Hollywood is looking to boost its sluggish fall box office with the release of Predator: Badlands. This new installment from 20th Century Studios is projected to earn around $60 million globally, with over $25 million coming from North America.

This marks Disney’s second sci-fi release this fall, following Tron: Ares, which grossed $134.3 million worldwide against a $220 million production budget. Predator: Badlands has a PG-13 rating, opening the door for younger viewers, unlike its predecessors that were rated R. This could attract more under-25 moviegoers.

The film is directed by Dan Trachtenberg, who previously revitalized the franchise with the Hulu release Prey, which became Hulu’s biggest premiere in August 2022. Interestingly, Badlands flips the narrative: instead of humans being hunted, the alien becomes the prey. Early reviews are also promising, with an 88% approval rating following its premiere in Hollywood.

Advance ticket sales are comparable to other films like Ballerina and The Accountant 2, both of which opened to around $24.5 million in the U.S. Predator: Badlands is set to screen in over 3,700 theaters including premium formats.

The Predator franchise has a rich history, dating back to 1987 with the Arnold Schwarzenegger original. There have been eight films since then, maintaining steady audience interest. In contrast, the Tron series has only seen three films since 1982. Historically, Predator films have had capped opening numbers, with the highest at $38.2 million for the 2004 crossover film Alien vs. Predator. Currently, anything over $25 million for Badlands would position it as the second biggest opening in the series.

Predator: Badlands will have premium format previews starting this Wednesday. It will also roll out internationally starting Thursday in various major markets, including France, Germany, and Australia. Projections suggest it could earn between $35 million to $38 million overseas, though that figure may be challenged by the current competitive landscape.

The international box office has been tricky; for comparison, the 2018 Predator film debuted with $49 million in major foreign markets, boosted by a $19 million opening in China. However, Badlands is not expected to reach such heights in China. Nonetheless, its earlier counterpart closed with a global total of $146 million.

To support the buzz around Badlands, stars like Sydney Sweeney and director Dan Trachtenberg have engaged in promotional activities, including a red-carpet event at the BFI Imax in London.

As more upscale films debut this season, there’s a mix of anticipation and uncertainty. Other competing movies include Christy, a boxing drama featuring Sydney Sweeney, and several other small-budget films, all expected to debut in the low single-digit millions.

With the landscape of cinema changing, fans are eager to see if Predator: Badlands can shake things up in theaters this fall. The broader trend of turning classic franchises into fresh stories may determine future box office success.
