Working together for the fourth year in a row, the Belfast Giants and Belfast Harbour are committed to promoting the Healthy Lifestyle Programme. Launched in 2005, this program encourages kids and young people to make better lifestyle choices. Josh Roach, a defenceman for the Giants, leads the initiative. He focuses on the importance of both physical and mental health, teaching youngsters how to manage stress, eat well, exercise regularly, and get enough sleep.

Laura Small, from The Odyssey Trust, expressed pride in this ongoing partnership. She highlighted how sports can inspire positive changes in young lives. “We aim to connect with young people across the city, helping them to stay active and look after their wellbeing,” she said.

The partnership has seen impressive results. Over the recent season, the program reached 5,638 students in 93 schools throughout Greater Belfast. In the 20 years since it began, thousands of students have benefited from its community-based approach, making health education relevant and engaging for them during their formative years.

Jenni Barkley, Community Engagement Manager at Belfast Harbour, emphasized their commitment to building a supportive and inclusive community. “We want to help young people improve their health and future,” she noted. Josh Roach’s relatable delivery makes this program accessible, giving young people the tools they need to lead healthier lives.

According to the World Health Organization, physical inactivity is one of the top risk factors for chronic diseases, highlighting the importance of programs like this. A recent survey showed that nearly 60% of children in Northern Ireland do not meet recommended activity levels, illustrating a clear need for initiatives promoting active lifestyles.

This partnership is also part of a broader trend where sports organizations are taking more responsibility for community health. The Healthy Lifestyle Programme remains open for registration for the 2025/26 school year, welcoming all primary schools in Greater Belfast.
